Downsize

I used to think it was a “big deal” to have a lot of friends or people in my circle. The more I had, the merrier I was, because I looked at them as people I could benefit from, but in a good way (i.e., success). As I grew older, I realized that being surrounded by many didn’t necessarily equate to winning. After a few evaluations, it became clear to me that I didn’t need a huge following, just a small ensemble. It can be tough letting people go, but if we won’t do it, then God will. Take Gideon, for example.

When God needed Gideon to defeat the Midianites, He (God) told him, “You’ve got way too many people.” You’d think having 32,000 men for battle was more than anyone could need, but God knew otherwise. So, He downsized Gideon’s army to just 300 men. I bet you’re wondering, “Wow! God that’s not nearly enough,” but it was. In fact, they had more than they needed because God was on their side. When I first read the story of Gideon, I thought, “God, what we’re You thinking when you let go of that many people?”

His response was simple, “I was thinking of you. If I’d allowed everyone to come along, you’d think they were responsible for your success instead, of Me, so I had to let them go.” I’ve always asked God to send me the right connections and people who want to help me succeed in my career, and He has. However, I’ve always maintained it was God who used them to do it. Remember, the people are your resource, but God is your Source.

Something to consider, companies downsize their employees, families downsize their homes, and people downsize their closets, but God will downsize your circle (if you won’t).
